As you approach childbirth, it's only natural to feel a bit apprehensive. Midwife and Haven expert Johanna Murphy has kindly shared her top tips for preparing for labour, as the key to quelling the nerves is to do your research, be prepared to advocate for yourself and have your birth plans ready to go.
Tip 01 - Eating Dates
Studies have shown eating six dates a day from 36 weeks will improve your labour.
Dates have an oxytocin-like effect on the body and can stimulate uterine contractions.
Tip 02 - Mama's Intuition
Your birth is your OWN and you get to make it whatever you want it to be. You can remain in total control of your birth experience. Your mindset, exercise and diet, and the way in which you choose to prepare will be the biggest influences on your labour/delivery.
Tip 03 - Embrace Contractions
Welcome every contraction – they are the ones that bring your baby to you!
Surround yourself with people who will give you strength and will advocate for you and most importantly TRUST in the process of birth, and believe in yourself and your baby.
Tip 04 - Water Birth
Consider a water birth. Research has shown it decreases labour pain, can decrease the duration of your labour, give you a greater sense of control and can reduce perineal trauma.
Tip 05 - Breathe In, Breathe Out
Fear can cause tension. Tension adds to pain. So try and relax your shoulders and focus on your breathing.Controlled breathing (long, slow, deep breaths) helps reduce tension in your muscles and may ease the birthing process.
